Calgary just recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 1988 Winter Olympics. Feb 13,2008.The Olympic Torch Relay (marked as ‘Share the Flame’) was the longest relay in Olympic history. In 88 days the torch modeled after the Calgary Tower was carried by famous and ordinary citizens in a run across Canada. Citzens won the chance to run a 1km distance by entering a contest lottery sponsored by Petro Canada.
In 1988 the Olympics were a proud Canadian Moment and the torch relay was a uniting factor of those games.
My brother carried the torch past the welcome to Calgary sign and this is that day that morning in Canadian history.
In 2010 Canada will be able to rekindle that pride with the 2010 Olympics.
